Lesson 1 in Grammer: The Gender



1- Masculine and Feminine Forms ( صيغة المذكر و المؤنث )

we have two ways to put the noun in masculine or feminine Forms, but not in all nouns


- the first way : put ess in the masculine form

* poet (شاعر) .................. poetess (شاعرة)

* prince (أمير) ................ princess (أميرة)

* Giant (عملاق) .............. giantess (عملاقة)

* manager (مدير) .......... manageress (مديرة)




you can apply this rule if the noun can't be masculine and feminine at the same time



- the second way: give a different noun

* boy (ولد) ......... girl (بنت)

* king (ملك) ...... queen (ملكة)

* monk (راهب) .... nun (راهبة)

* horse (حصان) .... mare (فرس)



Usually you should memorise these nouns




2- Common Gender ( ما يحتمل التذكير و التأنيث )


there are alot of nouns comes in masculine and feminine form at the same time

* friend ( صديق او صديقة )

* parent ( أب او أم )

* child ( طفل او طفلة )

* baby ( رضيع او رضيعة )

* servant ( خادم او خادمة )

* neighbour ( جار او جارة )

* cousin ( ابن عم او ابنة عم )

* partner ( شريك او شريكة )





3- Neuter Gender ( غير العاقل )


Here we have the same form for masculine and feminine

Lesson 2 in Grammer: Singular and Plural



As we konow , the general rule in English for the plural form is adding (s) for the singular form


examples:

* tree ........ trees

* garden ....... gardens

* flower ......... flowers

* door ............ doors




But also we have some nouns that not accept this rule:


1- If the noun ends with : s-ss-x-z-ch-sh we add (es) to make it plural

examples :

* gas ....... gases

* dress ...... dresses

* box .......... boxes

* wish ......... wishes ( أمنية ، أماني )

* watch .......... watches ( ساعة يد ، ساعات يد )





2- If the noun ends with y Preceded by a vowel : a-e-i-o-u then add only (s) to have the plural form

examples

* boy ........ boys

* valley ........ valleys ( وادي ، وديان )

* tray ........... trays ( صينية ، صواني )

* play .......... plays ( مسرحية ، مسرحيات )




3- If the noun ends with y and not Preceded by a vowel then remove the Y and add (ies) to have the plural form

examples :

* story ...... stories

* army ....... armies ( جيش ، جيوش )

* lady ..... ladies ( سيدة ، سيدات )

* try ....... tries ( محاولة ، محاولات )




4- If the verb ends with O then add (es) to have the plural form

examples:

* hero....... heroes ( بطل ، أبطال )

* potato...... potatoes

* volcano ....... volcanoes ( بركان ، براكين )



5- Also, there are a few nouns that end with O , but we add only (s) to have the plural form

these nouns are not 100% english words

examples:

* radio ........ radios

* studio ........ studios

* piano ........ pianos



6- If the noun ends with F or Fe then remove the F or the Fe and add (ves) to have the plural form

examples:

* wife...... wives( زوجة ، زوجات )

* wolf ........ wolves ( ذئب ، ذئاب )

* thief ........ thieves ( لص ، لصوص )



7- Also, there are a few words end with F and we add only (s) to have the plural form

Actually, there is no rule to know them


examples:

* proof..... proofs ( دليل ، أدلة )

* cliff....... cliffs ( منحدر ، منحدرات )

* gulf........ gulfs ( خليج ، خلجان )

* roof ........ roofs ( سطح ، أسطح )



8- If the noun ends with sis then convert it to (ses) to have the plural form

:examples

* basis .... bases ( اساس ، أساسيات )

* crisis ..... crises ( أزمة ، أزمات )



9- We have also Irregular plural

There is no rule for them



examples:

* man ..... men

* child ........ children ( طفل ، أطفال )

* mouse ...... mice ( فأر ، فئران )

* foot ..... feet ( قدم ، أقدام )



10- Some nouns have the same form for plural and singular

examples:

* Deer ( غزال ، غزلان )

* Sheep ( خروف ، خرفان )

* news ( خبر ، أخبار )

* means ( وسيلة ، وسائل )



11- Some nouns don't have a plural form such as : proper nouns - Abstract nouns

( اسم العلم ، الاسماء المجردة )

examples:

* Noor ( اسم بنت نور )

* guilt ( الشعور بالذنب )

* Iron ( حديد )

* water ( ماء )

* bread ( خبز )




12- Some nouns don't have a singular form

usually, nouns that end with s



examples:

* goods ( بضائع )

* trousers ( بنطلون )

* ethics ( اخلاقيات )

* arms ( أسلحة )

2- Uncountable : They are things that we can't count and they havn't singular and plural forms

Some rules for Countable and Uncountable Nouns


1- Countable nouns can preceded by ( a or an ) , but uncountable nouns can't preceded by them

- He ate an apple


- this ring is mad of gold

- Blood is red

- the water is hot today


2- we use ( much & little ) for uncountable nouns

and we use ( many & few ) for countable nouns



examples :

- I don't have much money

- He wants little butter

- there are many books on the shelf



3- We can use ( some - any - plenty of- alot of ) for countable and uncountable nouns

examples:

- I need some coffee

- I need some books

- I need alot of money

- I have a lot of pictures

There are many ways for comparering between adjectives , in this lesson we will take most of them :



1- To compare people, places, events or things, when there is no difference


subject1 + is + as + adj + as + subject2

or \ subject1 + is + not + as + adj + as + subject2



examples:

- Ahmed is as tall as Hany

( أحمد بنفس طول هاني )

- Soha is as intelligent as Maha

( سها بنفس درجة ذكاء مها )



2- Comparative : To compare the difference between two people, things or events.


* we put (er) at the end of the adjective + than

Note: we use this way with:

- adjectives with one syllable : Clean , new , cheap
( لها مقطع واحد فتنطق مرة وحدة )

- adjectives with two syllables, ending with -y , -le, -ow , -er
( لها مقطعين ، فيمكننا تجزئ نطقها )


examples:


- today is hotter than yesterday

- Your apartment is bigger than mine

- Gamal is stronger than mahmood

- your daughter is thinner than her brother

- my uncle is busier than my father


Note: If the word ends with y then wemove the y and add ier


* we put (more ) for all adjectives with more than two syllable


examples:

- this address is more accurate than the one you gave me last time

( هذا العنوان اكثر دقة من العنوان الذي أعطيتني اياه في المرة السابقة )

- shereen is more careless than Nada
( شيرين أكثر اهمالا من ندا )

- you are more foolish than your cousin
( انك اكثر حماقة من ابن عمك )





3- Superlative: to expresses the extreme or highest degree of a quality


* We add the + ( est) to the adjectives with one syllable and adjectives with two syllables, ending with -y , -le, -ow , -er


Examples:

-This is the biggest room I have ever seen

- Fouad is the tallest boy in his class

- sawsan is the prettiest girl in her family



* We add the + most + adjectives for adjectives with more than two syllable

examples:

- the lion is the mst dangerous animal in the zoo

- Rasha is the most intelligent student in this class
