**Everyone in the world has a name. Have you ever thought about names? How are they written? How do parents choose a name?
Every society has its own customs about names, but most have the same two parts for each name. The first part is the given name or names, which are also called first names in English-speaking countries because they are usually written first. The second part of a name is called the family name. These are also called surnames or last names because they are written last. However, the order of written names is not the same in all societies. For example, in China, Japan, Korea and many other countries around the world, people write their family name first and then their given name or names.
In many societies, family names come from the father. It is more common in Spanish-speaking countries, however, for the family name to come from the mother and father. For instance, if the mother is named Maria Fernandez and the father is called Carlos Terlaje, then the children will have the family name Terlaje-Fernandez.
In some countries there are no restrictions on what a child can be named. In others, there are restrictions on given names. In these countries, the name must be a traditional name from that culture. In all countries, parents often choose religious names. They also might choose names that have a special meaning, or they might name a child after someone special like a close friend or relative. **

D

1. A good title for this passage would be:
A. Family Names
B. How to Choose a Name

Names Around the World

4. In general, names:
A. are the same throughout the world
